Eating in Bergen: the widest choice on this whole dune coast
With just over twelve thousand residents, Bergen is the largest village in this area and so has the widest choice: from steakhouse to Asian, from a brown cafe, the traditional Dutch pub, to fine dining. Most of it sits within five minutes' walk around the Ruinekerk and along the Breelaan.
Anyone staying on the coast who wants a proper evening out drives to Bergen. The village lies four kilometres inland and has a centre where you walk from one place to the next. Note that this is Bergen in Noord-Holland, north of Amsterdam, not the Bergen in Norway.
Where should I be?
Around the Ruinekerk, the ruined church in the centre, and along the Breelaan. That is the heart of it, and most of the places stand there within walking distance of each other. Handy when you do not yet know what you fancy.
Can you tell it is an artists’ village?
Yes. Bergen has a long tradition of artists, with the Bergense School, a Dutch painting movement named after this village, as its best known legacy, and you see it back in how some of the places are furnished: their own work on the wall, changing exhibitions. That is not set dressing, that is how the village is put together.
Can I park here?
Paid parking, in the centre. Outside the centre it is often free and you walk five minutes. On summer Saturdays, finding a space in the centre is hard work.
How is this order decided?
The order below is not for sale. We sort on the Google rating, then on the number of reviews, then on the distance to the beach access. Whoever is at the top is there because guests put them there.
