Sleeping in Bergen aan Zee: few addresses, a lot of dune around them
Bergen aan Zee has a handful of hotels and other places to stay, wedged in between the Noordhollands Duinreservaat and the sea. That limited supply means you have to book early for July and August; it also means you are within five minutes of the dunes or the beach wherever you are.
The village is closed in on three sides by the Noordhollands Duinreservaat, the North Holland dune reserve, and on the fourth by the North Sea. Nothing more can be built here, and you see that back in the availability.
When do I need to book?
For July and August, well in advance. For spring and autumn you can often book much closer to the date, and it is finer then as well: an empty beach, and fallow deer walking in the dune reserve.
Do I need a dune pass?
For the Noordhollands Duinreservaat you do. It is managed by PWN and there is an entrance fee, unlike the Schoorlse Duinen of Staatsbosbeheer, the Dutch state forestry service, a few kilometres to the north. Some places arrange it for their guests; ask about it when you book.
How is this order decided?
The order below is not for sale. We sort on the Google rating, then on the number of reviews, then on the distance to the beach access. Whoever is at the top is there because guests put them there.
